Portage High School Puts Dr. Seuss’ Theory to the Test

PHS-Dr-Seuss-CollageAccording to Dr. Seuss, “The more you read the more you know. The more you know the more you grow.” Portage High School students are putting his long time theory into action. Knowing that one of the best relationships in the field of literacy is the one between students’ vocabulary knowledge and their reading comprehension, Portage Township Schools developed a list of academic vocabulary. Key words for all subject areas were established. The teaching and deep understanding of these words will cause students to become better readers and writers.

Students in Mr. Snodgrass’ Health class work in small groups to develop W.I.D.E. posters. Using the academic vocabulary words students design posters highlighting the word (W), an illustration (I), textbook definitions (D), and an example (E) of how the term can be used in their own words in a paragraph.
