Portage High School Cheerleaders Make Donation to St. Peter Lutheran Church Ladies Guild in 2016

The Portage High School Cheerleaders presented a check for $2025.25 to the St. Peter Lutheran Church Ladies Guild for their mastectomy pillow ministry. The cheerleaders, under the sponsorship of Coaches Laura Gaffney and Jennifer Willis, raised the money by selling Breast Cancer shirts that one of their fathers designed. They sold nearly 300 shirts.

They wanted to donate the money to a local charity. Coach Gaffney contacted Donna Faitah, the supervisor of the Diagnostic Center at St. Mary's Women's Center. Faitah knew of St. Peter's pillow ministry, since the church has donated numerous pillows to people who have had mastectomies and treatment at St. Mary's. They also donate the pillows to Porter Hospital.

On Wednesday, April 27, the cheerleaders met Faitah and presented the check to three representatives of St. Peter's Ladies Guild, Candy Gaines, Joleen Wilson, and Betty Hull.

Hull, who introduced the ministry to St. Peter, said, "Thank you, girls, for all your hard work. This money will buy a lot of material and stuffing to make more pillows. You did a great job!"

Gaffney said, "We try to reinforce to the girls that it is better to give than to receive, and that it is so important to contribute to our community."
