The Portage Indians are accustomed to change. Last year, they adjusted to a triple option offense. This year, they will have to adapt to a new coach and turf field.
The Indians went winless in last year’s regular season. They flipped the script at Lake Central in the Sectionals opener, upsetting LC 36-14. Senior running back and wide receiver Adrian Melendez said he believes the confidence gained from that win can carry over.
“Beating them last year was probably the best thing that happened to us,” he said. “We knew what we had to do, and we got it done. It was great to see us perform like we are capable of performing, and we know can do the same this year.”
Wally McCormack resigned as head coach in December. Former West Central and Culver head coach Darren Rodriguez took the reins in February, and senior cornerback T’Cori Lewis has welcomed the new face.
“He is the coach that everyone wants,” Lewis, who also plays wide receiver, said. “He is going to be the first person to tell you when you did something wrong, and the first person to tell you when you did something right. As players, we need that, we know he is a perfect fit for us and we can’t wait to start the season with him.”
Senior defensive back Christian West said he realizes that this is not only a season of change, but a season of lasts.
“It is my last chance to do big things,” he said. “I’m going to miss being on the old field with my close friends, but I am just ready to go, execute on the new field and play hard every game.”
Lewis said he has a message for the faithful fans who will travel to the glistening Warpath.
“Everyone who watches Portage Friday night football will want to put their reading glasses on,” he said. “It is about to get exciting.”
