Portage Fire Department Needs Residents Help in Clearing Hydrants

portage-patchThe Portage Fire Department is requesting your help!  Due to the unusually high amounts of snowfall, your fire fighters have been locating and digging out fire hydrants in the city. The City of Portage has 785 public owner hydrants and another 244 privately owned.  We are asking for all businesses and apartment complexes, with privately owned fire hydrants, to make sure they are clear of all snow.

It is important that a firefighter be able to locate and stand behind the hydrant for operation during a fire emergency.  We are asking home owners that, if the hydrant near your home has not been cleared, to help us out if you are able and clear the hydrant for use in an emergency.  The Fire Department has all fire hydrants located on maps, but if covered with snow it can be difficult to get their exact location. Firefighters having to gain access to a fire hydrant through snow can be very time consuming when time is critical.

If you are not able to clear the snow yourself or if you have questions please contact the Fire Department at 762-7404.
