Portage Celebrates Halloween With Scream Theatre

It is not always easy to find quality Halloween fun that the whole family can enjoy, both in price and in scare factor (or lack thereof). At Portage High School, the Thespians and National Honor Society are working together to bring all ages out to celebrate the upcoming holiday.

Scream Theatre and the NHS Funfair began Wednesday and will also run on Thursday, Oct. 24 during the same time span. The cost per event was $4 to help raise money for other activities later in the year.

After about one week of planning, the Thespians began building their sets Monday after school. Each group, or “room,” was responsible for coming up with their scare theme, building their set and providing most of the materials, costumes and makeup.

“This is my first year doing [Scream Theatre], and it was a whole new experience,” said junior Max Harsha. “Just coming up with ideas and seeing them come to life is really cool.”

Junior Teagin Powers agreed.

“To see it all come to life is really rewarding. Sure it’s only been three days, but those three days have practically kicked our butts [with all the work we have put in],” said Powers.

Their hard work sparked a great reaction from their patrons. After their tour through the haunted stage, many customers were pleasantly surprised at the tactics the students used to scare them.

“They kept saying my name,” laughed sophomore Carlos Castillo, who know many of the actors involved with Scream Theatre.

For the younger family members who did not want to venture toward the terror of Scream Theatre, they were invited to attend the NHS Funfair, where they could play games like Bozo Buckets and ring toss.

“It’s been a great turnout,” said junior Alicia Wood. “There’s been so many kids and we’ve just had so much fun with them.”

Wood said that the NHS is using this to help in their mission to give back to the community. Besides that, NHS members got to have a fun night with the children of the community.

“Interacting with the kids has been so much fun. The parents, too, have been really nice. We’ve just all had a blast and bonded,” said Wood.

The same was true in the Thespian department, as far as growing closer with the other members of their theatre group.

“I have met so many amazing people, and I have gotten so in-depth and into this, and it’s just been awesome,” Powers said. “I’ve met so many friends, people who I would never talk to otherwise.”

Scream Theatre and the Funfair are great ways to get the entire family into the spirit of the season. Come support local groups while experiencing a spooktacular night.
