Portage Avenue Baptist Church Becomes Mission Control for Junior Investigators

Portage-Ave-Baptist-VBS-2013Participants of this year’s Vacation Bible School will enter the world of high-tech investigation as they follow the clues to the find King of Kings. Preparations are underway to transform the church’s typical auditorium into a top secret mission control center to keep in line with this year’s VBS theme, Investigation Destination. “We’re lucky to have a pastor who’s not afraid of putting a few holes in the walls,” jokes member, Jan Zurek. “The VBS Director, Lisa Blair, likes the decorations to be over-the-top whether it’s life-sized dinosaurs, giant carousels, or in this year’s case, dangling helicopters and racing motorcycles. Its takes a virtual task force of members who paint, cut, build, and stand on really high ladders to make all the elements come together.”

Portage Avenue Baptist Church is fairly small, but their efforts are enormous. Vacation Bible School is its largest community outreach program of the year, so they work full-throttle to create a quality program that engages the kids. The preparations are intense and involve anyone that wants to contribute whether they bring snacks, color posters, or volunteer to work with the participants that week. The assistant pastor and his wife both use their limited vacation days to facilitate this program. Year after year, the congregation’s commitment to VBS is always inspiring.

Kids ages 4 years old through sixth grade are encouraged to attend this free event that runs June 17-21 from 9:30am – noon. VBS requirements: just be ready to have the MOST FUN EVER!!! Visit the website, www.thatchurchinportage.com or call (219) 763-1827 for more information.
