This has been called Philip Seymour Hoffman’s s “full-scale ‘Hoffman’ performance - a master class in acting.” Hoffman stars in this spy thriller based on a John le Carre novel. Hoffman plays Gunther Bachmann, an intelligence expert in Hamburg, the city where the 9/11 terrorists organized their attack. Bachmann finds what may be the biggest case of his career when a Russian with a dark past comes to Hamburg to seek asylum and seeking his father’s fortune from a German bank.
The film centers on the intrigue that develops around Bachmann’s pursuit off this man and what he discovers, amidst a number of other characters or various intent. Robin Wright portrays a CIA agent. “Rolling Stone” describes “The cat-and-mouse game Hoffman plays with Wright is splendidly done.”
The magazine notes that “every move Hoffman makes subtly rivets attention. Hoffman is simply magnificent.”
