Operation Diploma is an initiative of the Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) at Purdue University, intended to develop programs and policies designed to boost academic success of student service members and veterans on campus. The grant was part of more than $1 million that MFRI awarded through its Operation Diploma initiative to 25 Indiana post-secondary institutions to enhance services for the state's student service members, veterans and their families.

One of the significant aspects of this grant is that it will allow for a fall semester educational symposium for faculty and staff - from PNC and other universities - which will focus on understanding the needs of student veterans, successful veteran education practices and the implementation of the Supportive Education for the Returning Veteran (SERV) learning community for returning veterans.

The grant will also provide for supported learning, such as paid teaching assistants, to complement the SERV Model courses. This model has been identified by the Department of Defense as "Best Practice in Veteran Education." The Military Family Research Institute of Purdue University is interested in researching the effectiveness of this model. Funding to provide tutoring services to student veterans, service members and their families in multiple subjects is also a feature of this grant.

Other features include funding for the third annual PNC Veterans Day event on campus and other programs such as a Veteran and Service Member and Family Career Transition Event. This grant will also make it possible to retain the part-time position of Veteran Program coordinator with PNC student Mark Strudas, a veteran, continuing in that capacity.
