Board certified plastic surgeon Gus Galante, MD, has made a $1,300 donation to Community Hospital’s Women’s Diagnostic Center. The contribution to the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund will help local women-those without insurance and who otherwise couldn’t afford it-receive diagnostic breast care.
The donation was generated from a percentage of the proceeds from Dr. Galante’s breast patient cases during the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness month). Raising breast cancer awareness has been an important ongoing cause for Dr. Galante.
“If we can help just one individual get the care that they need, then it will be very much worth the effort,” Galante said. “I hope that this proactive stance will inspire others to do the same and spark other donations.”
Breast cancer is a disease that can be diagnosed through routine mammography. The Women’s Diagnostic Center of Community Hospital offers 3D mammography (and soon to have ABUS Automated Breast Ultrasound System) with same-day appointments and, in most cases, same-day results. With these technological advances, together with coordination between area physicians, women can generally begin treatment for breast cancer at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System within 10 days of diagnosis.
“Until we can prevent breast cancer, our strongest weapon against it remains the detection of it at the earliest time that we can,” said Mary Nicholson, MD, medical director of the women’s center in Munster. “This funding will enable us to serve many more with the care they need,” she said.
