PHS Weekend Results: Girls Golf, Cross Country Teams Come Away with Wins

Girls’ Golf team won over the weekend beating Hanover (215) and Hobart (218) with a score of 204. Lauren Murray was the medalist with a score of 44.

The Boys’ JV Tennis team participated in the Lowell Invite placing 2nd. MVP for Portage was John Fannin. Good sportsmanship award goes to Mark Eierman, Shawn Salazar and Xavier Gilliam. Yeah team nice job.

The girls cross country team opened their season with a win at the Hammond Gavit Invitational on Saturday. Leading the way was freshman Paige Pizer, who finished 3rd overall in her high school debut. Continuing the scoring for Portage were Terra Norman in 8th, Christina Delturco in 9th, Abby Trader in 11th, and Rachel Foreman in 14th. Cross country newcomers Janee Escobedo and Megan Cassidy also had impressive races, finishing 17th and 24th. The girls next race is Tuesday at Woodland Park against Merrillville.

The Boys’ Cross Country team also came home with a win from the Gavit invite beating Munster (73) and Andrean (76) with a score of 69. Robert Blackwell 4th overall, Anthony Best 5th overall, Max Zmija 18th overall, Dustin Balboa 20th overall, Ross Falk 22nd overall and David Clegg was 24th overall. Despite having an off day, they were able to gut it out and beat 2 very good team in Munster and Andrean.

In Football action, the team lost to a very talented St Rita team by a score of 0-22. Despite the loss our defensive team played very well by holding their top running back to under 100 yards. Be sure to come out and support the Indians this Friday as they host Lake Central.

The JV team also lost on Saturday to St. Rita 0-27

The Freshman Football team also lost to St. Rita by a score of 21-35. Hashim Simpson scored 2 touchdowns. Nathan Swier scored 1. Mustafa Tate and Aaron Luick combined for 20 tackles and 2 sacks.
