PHS Students Recognized at WLHS Induction

On Thursday, March 14, foreign language students at Portage High School were induced into World Language Honor Society. World Language Honor Society recognizes the most prestigious students that take French, German, Spanish or Latin classes at PHS. In order to get inducted into this organization, students must maintain A’s for three straight semesters, not including their first year of a language.

Language teachers Candis Carey, Andrea Flynn, Tom McKeown, Donovan McKiddy, Dawn Moseley, Sarah Paris, Linda Peda and Jennifer Wilson all presented their students with their awards at the ceremony.

One individual in particular went above and beyond the standards that were set to be inducted into World Language Honor Society. Senior Sarah Batey was inducted to WLHS for a second time in her high school career.

Batey was first inducted for passing three semesters of German with an A, and was again inducted for passing three semesters of French with an A. Batey was awarded with an exclusive plaque for being a two time inductee.

“I just really liked the languages, and the teachers are phenomenal,” Batey said. “They push us really hard to work and they are really amazing teachers.”

The students are not the only individuals that deserve to be recognized. The according to the World Language Department Chair Linda Peda, the teachers work their hardest to educate their students and keep them on the right track.

Peda has been chairing the event for the sixth consecutive years and claims said it is all for the students. She is proud to see that the students are individually acknowledged for their accomplishments in the language department.

“It’s a worthwhile event. The kids are rewarded for their efforts; I think it’s worth it,” Peda said.
