PHS Students Go “Down the Rabbit Hole” on Prom Night

There is no doubt that Portage High School’s 2013 Prom was a major success. It was spectacular night unlike any other with a very unique theme and decorations unlike any other.

The theme, Down the Rabbit Hole, was based on Tim Burton’s twist on the classic “Alice in Wonderland.” The Prom committee chose the theme with the Prom-goers in mind in hopes of giving them a Prom unlike any other to remember.

The responsibilities of the Prom Committee are to make sure everything goes as planned. Planning Prom started in late October and ended in the middle of March. The committee selects decorations from magazines that fit the theme and order them before spring break.

The committee is also responsible for hiring a photographer and artist to assist it with Prom photographs and backdrops. The committee also designs tickets, picks out favors, sells the tickets and handles a lot of stressed-out ticket buyers.

“We decided on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ because it is not your usual, cliché Prom. We wanted to make this Prom special, something the seniors would remember for a long time. I mean we do plan Prom for the seniors,” head of Prom Committee Noah Volk said.

Prom took place at the Expo Center in Valparaiso, where there were four main decoration set ups.

One decoration was the entrance to the rabbit hole, which consisted of the rabbits stop watch and a checkerboard floor. Another one was a garden scene; an attempt to do a spin-off of the talking flowers. One of the other main decorations was the Red Queen's castle; it had a playing card painting white roses red. The last decoration consisted of a lacy canopy with a rose and checkerboard hanging in the middle of it above the dance floor.

The night seemed like it was planned for perfection, but the weather did not seem to cooperate. Weather forecasts called for rain on the night of Prom.

“I got kind of upset when I learned it was going to rain because I wanted beautiful pictures,” junior Makayla Bussler said. “My prom group decided to take pictures under a gazebo so I was glad that they still turned out great.”

Despite the rain, students managed to make the best of their night.

The evening winded down with the awaited announcements of the Prom Court.

The Prom court consisted of seniors Rashaan Coleman as Prom King and Desiree Key as Prom Queen. Juniors Nick Jordan, Tep Juyanid, Noah Volk and John Fannin were all named Prom Princes. The junior princesses were Savannah Yuhasz, Autumn Stevenson, Keanna Crum and Jessica Loza.

“I was so stressed out for prom between hair and nail appointments, dress shopping, shoe shopping and just planning for Prom in general,” Katelyn Richerson said. “But, it was all worth it because I had a blast at Prom with all of my friends.”
