PHS Holds Homecoming Football Game Against Crown Point

Portage High School spirit was on display all week long with the festivities cumulating with the Homecoming football game against Crown Point on Friday night.  Unfortunately, the game resulted in a tough 42-0 loss for the Indians.

Rashaan Coleman received the start at quarterback in place of the injured Kris Knies.  He led the rushing attack for Portage throughout the night, leading Portage inside the 25 yard line at one point, only to have the Indians turn the ball over on downs.

Although the outcome of the game was less than ideal, the Indian faithful managed to have a great time throughout the night.  The student section was rocking, led by a loud senior class.  Anthony Byron, who graduated from PHS last spring after spending most of his high school tenure as the Indian mascot, made a guest appearance dressed as the Indian.  Students, parents and fans were packed like sardines in the stands and the concession area.

At halftime, the annual Homecoming activities took place.  The seniors took first place in Spirit Week, Hallway Decorating and Float Building.

All five Queen Nominees were introduced.  Morgan Jackson, Nikki Cloyd, Tracey Flores, Jessica Barrett and Alex Bustos all had their accomplishments announced over the public address system.  Alex Bustos was announced as the 2011 Portage Homecoming Queen.  Last year’s Queen Brittany Doll was on hand to help hand over the crown.

The football team votes for its most valuable senior to receive the honor of Mr. Football each year.  This year’s recipient was defensive back Antonio Rodriguez.  One of the most popular and likeable players on and off the field, Rodriguez was the perfect choice to succeed graduate Jake Dixon as Mr. Football.

Homecoming Week wrapped up with an informal dance held in the school at the conclusion of the game.  The week of fun allowed students to have a much needed escape from the everyday grind of going to school.  Click here for a recap of the juniors Powder Puff victory over the seniors, click here for more details on everything that occurred during the week at PHS or click here for more on Friday’s Pep Rally.
