PHS Health & Wellness Sutdents Learning “Life Skills”

phs-floorThe Health and Wellness classes at Portage High School have been studying a number of topics including building good and learning “life skills”. Some of these life skills are character building, using stress management techniques, goal setting, responsible decision-making, and learning refusal skills in order to “say no” to risky behaviors. We have spent time discussing how mental and emotional problems occur, how they affect their self-esteem and self-identity, and have discussed family and friend relationships.

We have done this through role play activities, discussions, differentiated instruction, small and large group activities and projects related to these topics.

Most recently, the Health and Wellness classes at Portage High School spent two weeks learning Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This was done with sophomore students in their health classes. This unit also included learning techniques for choking adults, children and infants. Students were able to use manikins for practice.

Every student was issued their own face mask to use as a barrier between the manikin and their own mouth/face. Students enjoyed this unit and did well.
