PHS Charity Event to Honor Armed Forces Day

Armed-Forces-Day-2012The Portage High School Varsity Football team will be participating in a fundraising training exhibition on May 18, 2012, 5 pm, as a part of honoring Armed Forces Day, benefiting the "Wish for Our Heroes Foundation". The event will be held at the Indians Warpath field.

The day's events will feature training sessions from the USMC Indiana Marine Corps Reserves:

  • The Marines, led by Capt. Shipley, Gunnery Sergeant Gooch will lead our football team through a combat fitness test (C.F.T.)
  • Fun for all ages: rock climbing wall, food, games
  • In attendance: The US Army, led by SFC. Serrano, Indiana National Guard led by SSG. Yates, Army Reserve led by MSG. Boderick & American Legion 260 led by Commander Bruce Thorn
  • Portage Booster Club/PFND Clubs selling brats, walking tacos and Portage gear

All veterans get in FREE and will be honored at halftime! For the rest of the community, admission is $6. Our goal is to raise money for an amazing Indiana charity, "Wish for Our Heroes, Inc", and your Portage Indians football team!

Another special event featured will be the "Adopt a Player" program. This program helps our players receive items such as workout gear, equipment, and admission to special camps throughout the season. Football games bring in the most revenue for the school; however, football with the pure numbers has a tremendous amount of kids who can't afford truly necessary items throughout the year and may not benefit from such revenue. The community members and business owners in the area will have the opportunity to adopt a player(s) and that player will also benefit from mentoring by those who support them.
