PHS Athletics Weekend Recap: Softball, Track, Baseball & Tennis

SOFTBALL:
The Varsity Softball team defeated Harrison 5-1 Saturday making their record 7-3 (3-1 DAC).  Natalie Korpak pitched a two hitter and had 2 RBI’s vs. defending 4A state runner-up Harrison.  Rhi Smolar was 2 for 3 and scored twice for Portage.

JV SOFTBALL:
Friday the JV Softball team defeated Merrillville 11-1 making their record 4-2 (2-2 DAC).  Ali Johnson went 2-2 with 4 RBI’s, Payton Hulse gave up 3 hits and struck out 3 to the win, she also added one hit and an RBI.  Heather Zengler, Evie Tsarnas, Bri Gibson and Lauren Murray each added an RBI.   

On Saturday the JV team defeated Harrison 10-2 to improve their record to 5-2 (2-2 DAC).  Brittany Adams went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI’s and picked up her third win pitching.  Morgan Eastridge, Katie Peksenak and Randi Marshall all contributed offensively.

GIRLS TRACK:
Portage finished in 3rd place at the Northridge Relays on Saturday scoring 69.5 points.

BOYS GOLF:
The Boys Golf team finished in 13th out of 21 teams with a team score of 360.  Jack Lewis shot an 82 and Kyle Adkins shot an 86.  The Varsity record is now 3-1.

FRESHMAN BASEBALL:
The Freshman Baseball team defeated East Chicago Central 10-0.  Riley Rivas pitched the complete game shut out striking out 14 batters.  Justin Newcom, CJ Haupt and Seth White led Portage in offense.  Their record is now 3-0-1 (0-0-1 DAC).

VARSITY BASEBALL:
The Varsity Baseball team improved to 7-2 on the season by beating Clark 4-3.  Allen Barrett pitched a complete game to pick up the win for the Indians while Dylan Ozbolt scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th.  The Indians return to the diamond today against #2 ranked Laporte at home.  The Varsity record is now 7-2 (1-1 DAC).

JV BASEBALL:
The JV Baseball team defeated Boone Grove in both games of a double header on Saturday.  Portage won 18-4 in game 1, and 12-5 in game 2 making their record 6-3 (2-0 DAC).  Brad Stemple was the winning pitcher in game one and Steven Saylor got the win in game two.  Zac Vardaman, Andrew Brown, Travis Marsh, Christian Cherry, Jacob Bothwell, Zach Thorn, Kris Springman, Riley Thompson and Chris Bruno all had great offensive efforts for Portage.

GIRLS TENNIS:
The Lady Indians tennis team took 2nd place in the Hobart Invite on Saturday beating Hobart 3-2, Morton 5-0, and losing to New Prairie 1-4.  The Indians improved their record to 5-1.  Congratulations to Carly Bermes for winning the individual round of the tournament at number one singles going 3-0 on the day.  Please help cheer on the girls tonight as they take on Andrean at 4:00 on our home courts.
