PHS Athletics Roundup: Boys & Girls Track, Softball, Baseball, Tennis All in Competition

The boys track team competed in a double dual last night against Chesterton and Merrillville. The Indians defeated Chesterton 69-63 and also defeated Merrillville 83-48. Top performances included: Jeron Blake winning the 100 meter dash, Lorenzo Wells coming from behind and winning the 300 meter hurdles, Alvin Best winning the 400 meter dash and becoming the first area track runner to break the 50 second mark, registering a 49.97. Joey Little and Logan Fischer went 1st and 2nd in shot put, both easily topping 50 feet. The 4x400 team of Alvin Best, Alex Sanchez, Jeron Blake, and David Clegg also won. All runners competed well, and a lot of runners posted personnal bests. The Indians next travel across the state line to compete in the Bloom Invitational in Illinois.

Girls Track: Chesterton 82, Portage 51, Merrillville 90, Portage 43, Rhyan Sloan finished first in the 3200 meter run with a time of 12 minutes 19.7 seconds, Tara Kostelnik finished first in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet 1 an1/2 inches. Shakiea Boyd finshed first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.75 seconds. Ashley Sosbe finished 2nd in the Discus and 3rd in the shot put. Paige Pizer finished 1st in the 1600 meter run (5:39.5) and Keanna crum finished 1st in the 800 meter run with a time of(2:35.9) Madison Kurtz finished 1st in the 100 hurdles and 3rd in PoeVault. Other top meet performers included Hannah Medina in the shot put, Abby Trader and Erin Reynolds in the 3200m run Jade McKnight and Ali Johnson in the long jump. Victoria Ostrander, Jalena Millsap, Isabel Melendez and Shakiea Boyd finished 2nd in the sprint relay. Racheal Gonzalez led the 400 meters for Portage finishing in 3rd place.

The Varsity softball team lost to Crown Point 7-0. Jena Alaniz had a hit and 2 stone bases. Alexis Johnson and Kaitlin Doud each added a hit.

JV lost 2-1. Madi Jercha went the distance, striking out seven.

The JV baseball team beat Bishop Noll 8-5. Mike Lattanzi 3 hits, 2 RBI’s, Chris Klenk 3 hits. Klenk and Bearss combined on mound for 8 K’s.

In Tennis, varsity won 5-0 over Morton and JV won 4-0. MVP goes to Kaley Liang at #3 singles
