Killian Dash is a service technician at Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana™ working in residential sales and service. He works to install and repair safe, operating garage doors for members of the community. Without prior experience, Dash heard about the position from a friend and he took “a leap of faith.”
“I came in having absolutely no experience, knowing absolutely nothing about garage doors. I was extremely nervous because of that when I applied,” Dash said. “I've been working here for a year and a half now, and I feel like I've really come a long way in such a short amount of time.”
Garage doors are an essential part of a home. As a service tech, Dash installs doors on new garages and repairs garage doors that may not be functioning properly to ensure community members will be safe if an emergency evacuation situation were to occur.
“I think this is really important because garage doors are considered a point of entry in case of an emergency just like the main door of a house,” Dash said. “Making sure that the customer has a fully functional garage is important for getting out of an emergency.”
The troubleshooting and repair process can be tedious due to all of the different possibilities and moving parts. Dash explained he finds this process to be quite interesting.
“There are many different ways to get a garage door to function,” Dash said. “It's really interesting to see all the ways that you can get to go. It really does amaze me.”
Dash would not be in the position to help community members that he is in today without his fiancée because she encouraged and motivated him during the application process.
“My fiancée really motivated and pushed me to be the person that I am today, especially career-wise,” Dash said. “She pushed me to not settle for less and to step out of my comfort zone and put me into a position where I know that I'm doing something better for myself.”
Dash explained this was definitely the case when applying for this job at Overhead Door. Although he did get a call back from the company, he was almost too nervous to pursue the opportunity because of his lack of experience. Without his fiancée encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone and go for it, he said he would most likely not be where he is today.
A year and a half after Dash was hired, he is not able to pick a favorite part of the job because of how interesting and enjoyable he finds this line of work.
“I really can't complain about this job. There's not a favorite. I just love what I do. I love the whole idea of it,” Dash said. “There are days when I'm put into a situation that can be challenging, but overall, I love overcoming challenges and being able to say that I did it.”
