Every holiday season, the team at Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana participates in one of the most moving events of their year – their annual toy drive for Fieler Elementary School in Merrillville. The Overhead Door of Northwest Indiana crew loaded up their trucks with toys gifted by their fellow team members and customers and delivered a mountain of presents to the Fieler doorstep on Friday morning.

The program started eight years ago when the Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana team asked if the school would be the beneficiary of their new holiday donation drive. Fieler Elementary School was quick to accept and had already started identifying students and families in need over the season.

“We have quite a few families that aren’t as lucky as others at Christmas time and ask us for help,” said Beata Quanstrom, Teacher’s Aide at Fieler Elementary. “Sometimes we already know that they might need help with presents for Christmas. It’s hard to tell your kids that Santa’s not coming to your house.”

Each year the school puts together a list of families who need help the most and calls out to organizations and businesses around the community for assistance. But with Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana, it works a bit differently.

“Overhead Door always contacts us first, which is amazing,” Quanstrom said. “Not all of the kids who receive the toys are students here. Some of them are siblings at home, or students at Merrillville Intermediate. We take care of the whole family, not just the students enrolled here.”

Each Christmas, Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana brings even more gifts, and this year the toys stacked in Quanstrom’s office looked like a small mountain.

“We wouldn’t have this company if it wasn’t for our community, so we take every opportunity to give back,” said Nathan Carrasquillo, Sales Coordinator at Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana. “We wouldn’t be able to do this drive without our customers as well. Their generosity over the last eight years enables us to keep doing this.”

Fieler Principal Michael Megyesi, new to the school this year, was floored when he saw Quanstrom’s room transform into an elf’s workshop.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “Overhead Door is helping us make these kids’ holiday so much brighter. For a company as reputable as theirs to reach out to us is a dream come true, it’s a real miracle. It’s a testament to the generosity their company brings to this community.”

Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana also runs a food drive over the holidays and donates all their collected items to the Ross Township Food Pantry.
