NIPSCO is alerting customers of an increase in bill payment scams.
Most commonly, impersonators claiming to be NIPSCO employees are calling to inform customers of a delinquent bill and requesting that immediate payment be made to avoid being shut off.
If customers are unsure about the legitimacy of any e-mail, phone call, program or offer claiming to be affiliated with NIPSCO, please call NIPSCO’s 24-Hour Customer Service Center at 1-800-4NIPSCO (1-800-464-7726).
NIPSCO reminds customers who are uncertain of their current account status that they can check the information printed on their recent billing statement, call NIPSCO to speak directly with a customer service representative or register and view their bill on NIPSCO’s secure website.
Customers have the following payment options: online, by phone, by mail or at one of NIPSCO’s authorized payment locations. A list of authorized locations can be found at www.NIPSCO.com/BillingPayment.
Tips to Keep Customers Safe from Scams
Potential threats or scams can appear in a variety of forms, including phone calls and e-mails. By following some of these simple tips below, customers can help avoid being the victim of a scam.
- Never give personal information, including Social Security numbers and banking information, to unconfirmed sources. NIPSCO only asks for a Social Security number when a customer is applying for new service or to validate an account holder when a customer calls to obtain account information, complete a transaction or service-related request over the phone.
- If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, contact 911 as well as your local banking institution or credit card company if applicable.
- Legitimate bill assistance programs are available to qualifying customers. For more information on these offerings, visit www.NIPSCO.com/PaymentAssistance.
