United Way has teamed up NIPSCO for their annual Charity of Choice, which this year focuses on helping local veterans. The Charity of Choice initiative encourages employees to support the selected organization or cause through financial donations as well as through volunteerism. United Way joined the cause by assisting in the creation of volunteer opportunities like the Veteran’s Home Improvement project. The project helps veterans and families of active duty members with some minor home improvements. The project is open to residents of Lake, LaPorte, and Porter Counties. The home improvements consist of yard clean up, basic landscaping, and interior painting.
“United Way is extremely grateful to have the chance to partner with NIPSCO on this project since it gives the community a chance to give back to those who have given so much for us,” said Lake Area United Way President & CEO Lisa Daugherty. “It’s an incredible opportunity to not only help out around their homes, but to also get to know their stories and say thank you for their service.”
“Our Charity of Choice is chosen by our employees and reflects the organizations or causes they are passionate about. Everyone is very excited to have a chance to get out in the community and work directly with the veterans and their families,” said NIPSCO Public Affairs Manager Rick Calinski.
United Way is still looking for veterans or families of active duty members who are in need of assistance with basic yardwork, landscaping, and interior painting. The projects will take place on various Saturday’s throughout the summer. There are no income or age requirements to be considered for this project. If you are interested in learning more or about applying to be one of the home improvement recipients please reach out to Megan Sikes at msikes@lauw.org or 219-923-2302 ext. 311.
