NICTD Plans Road Closures in North Hammond

The City of Hammond was informed that the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) intends on closing the Johnson Avenue and Henry Avenue South Shore Line railroad crossings beginning Friday, September 27, 2024 through Wednesday, October 4, 2024. These closures are taking place so that existing track (Track #1) can be replaced and is part of the West Lake expansion project and Gateway Station project. This closure is in addition to the current NICTD closure of Hohman Avenue. Motorists are encouraged to use Sheffield or Calumet Avenues to cross the South Shore Line in North Hammond.

NICTD’s contractor intends on working 24-hour days to expedite the work. The City has been told that the loudest over-night noise expected is when construction vehicles are in reverse causing a backup horn to sound. Residents in the near vicinity are being notified individually by the contractor about the work and noise.

NICTD’s contractor intends on making a second similar request when Track #2 work is scheduled. Hohman Avenue is expected to remain closed until the work on Track #2 is completed.
