New Classes for Winter/Spring 2014 at Lubeznik Center for the Arts

rotAThis Winter and Spring, Lubeznik Center for the Arts is offering many new classes, programs, and one-day workshops that are sure to pique a variety of interests and refine skills for every age group.

Whether you are looking for a new medium to explore, a veteran storyteller looking for new inspiration, or looking to expand your cartooning skills, LCA is sure to have the class that appeals to you. The mix of standard core classes, classes back by popular demand, and inspiring new classes bring access to a variety of media to our audience.

Core classes for adults include drawing and watercolor taught by the outstanding Neil Kienitz, and the ever popular Sandcastle Writers Workshop in which Jo Pilecki uses the Amherst Writers and Artists Method to instruct students of all experience levels in the art of fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry.

Back by popular demand are Fabric Collage, where students will learn the art of fusible quilting by Linda Sorkin Eisenberg, and Daring Derby Hat Making, where pastry chef turned milliner Amanda Joyner teaches how to create quirky and unique hats fit for the Kentucky Derby. Students will nosh on sweets from Bowler Man Confections while creating their fabric and feather embellished masterpieces. In Fused Glass 1, taught by glass enthusiast Twyla Butler, students will put the fundamentals of glass fusing (layout, cutting, fusing, and kiln work) to work while they create shiny new coasters and a piece or two of distinctive jewelry. At the Bookbinding Workshop led by Bill Barrick, students will learn how to make their own books or journals by folding, stitching, and gluing paper signatures into a book block. One of a kind book covers will be created for these books and journals using repurposed materials such as old leather purses or luxurious wallpaper samples. New selections this Winter/Spring include Japanese Stab Bookbinding, Memoir Writing, and Storytelling.

The youngsters have a great selection of classes to choose from this winter as well. Two core classes, Drawing for Young People, and Young Artists Studio will be back as always to give students the solid foundation they need to explore the arts as they grow. Cartooning and Manga is back by popular demand and is taught by working cartoonist Bill Cavalier. Children will learn the “Old School Method” of “good ole’ pencil and pen on paper.” Little Hands: Art Explorations for Preschoolers is new this Winter for our youngest art enthusiasts. Children aged 3-5 will explore and discover a variety of kid-safe materials and stretch their imagination with an assortment of projects. A new sampler class for home-schooled children, taught by teaching artist Nani-Lei, explores art and nature by experimenting with drawing, printmaking, fabric dyeing, and papermaking.
