Name Revealed for New South County Park

rot1Plans are moving forward for a new South County Park through the Porter County Parks and Recreation Department. Porter County Park Planner, Ray Joseph, presented the master plan for the new South County Park at the October Meeting of the Porter County Parks & Recreation Board. As part of this presentation, the name for the park was unveiled as “Aukiki Park”.

Craig Kentworthy, Park Board Vice President, announced the name to the crowd explaining the process through which it was selected. This name stems from the Native American name for the Kankakee River. The Parks Department hosted a naming contest among local schools to reach the final name, while teaching local students the history of the land where the park will be located. The winning name came from Mrs. Krieger’s Morgan Township Elementary School fourth grade class.

Aukiki Park, still in the planning phase, will reside between 650 and 700 South in Kouts. The park will be home to several athletic fields to promote local recreation, as well as encourage travelling teams to visit the region. The master plan that was presented and that the park will move forward with has been the result of months of planning including several public community and steering committee meetings.
