Museum Exhibit Opens Sunday, Telling Extraordinary Story of Ordinary Place

Central-Stories-Block-PartyValparaiso’s Central Neighborhood is not unlike any other. Kids have learned to ride their bikes on the streets, residents walk their dogs, life is lived here no differently that it is in any other place. For anyone learning to see it for the first time, the Central neighborhood – building after building, street after street – is a compelling story of community being formed and reformed.

Since last August the Porter County Museum has been learning to see the Central neighborhood through the Central Stories Project, an oral history project focusing on the neighborhood. By exploring buildings, walking the streets, talking with neighbors, researchers have discovered the extraordinary in the ordinary. On June 23, The Central Stories Project exhibit will open at the museum, inspiring visitors with the story of an incredible place.

The Porter County Museum encourages visitors to look at their homes with fresh eyes and open ears. Imagine what you may find in your own backyard. The museum plans on continuing its domestic explorations with even more Stories Projects to come. Look for the next location to be announced this September.

Join in the celebration of incredible places at the PoCo Muse Summer Block Party Sunday, June 23 from two o’clock to five o’clock (come at one o’clock to hear a special presentation if you’re a member). Bring your appetites, your sunscreen, and your neighbor.
