Miller’s Senior Living Gives Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce a Helping Hand

PortageChamberMillersSeniorHomeLast week, members from Millers Senior Living assisted the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce by helping to stuff, address and stamp their brochure mailings.

“The Chamber greatly appreciates the time each member took to help out the chamber and for them to do this was tremendous,” says office manager Nancy Simpson. “Their help allowed other members of the chamber to focus on their tasks and remain undistracted.”

Six members from Miller’s Senior Living were part of the group that helped with the brochures. Here are the members being recognized.

Dorothy Hoover (89): is from Chicago, 25 years ago Dorothy and her husband decided to retire to the Portage. Dorothy moved to Miller’s Senior Community 3 years ago. She enjoys being with her friends, loves the food. Dorothy also enjoys volunteering in other areas. Dorothy enjoys the music in the park.

Joe Goss (age 88): Is from Valparaiso, moved to the Assisted Senior Community 7 years ago. Joe is a retired heavy equipment operator. Joe spent 50 years in the local 150 engineers. Joe is also a WII veteran. Joe also enjoys music in the park.

Ella Mae Evans (age 94): Lived in West Virginia, moved to Portage area 30 years ago. Ella says she loves living at Millers Senior Community, because she is around her friends, enjoys the food and a safe place to be.

Mildred Powell (Millie) (age 86): A native to the area. Lived in Gary since 1965. Mille is a retired nurse, worked for US Steel. I enjoy not cooking, cleaning, and doing the lawn. Millers is a good place to live. The food and staff are very nice. I enjoy being with my friends.

Marge Cernia: Lived in Griffith. Move to Portage 43 years ago. Marge was a caretaker for your mother and husband. Marge says I enjoy hanging out with friends. Everyone is nice and I have a good time.

Elaine Waite: A native to the area: Lived in Hobart and was a Gary elementary school teacher for 45 years. Elaine loves to greet everyone at the front door. Elaine says this is home.

This kind of cooperation between the two organizations is the kind of cooperation and relationships the Portage Chamber wishes to have with all members within the community, creating a positive and beneficial relationship for all of those involved.

“This was the first time we asked members from Miller’s to help us,” said Simpson. “But since it was such a positive experience we are looking forward to having help from them again in the future.”
