As we celebrate Labor Day to honor the men and women who work to keep the country great, it’s important to recognize the heroes who have helped shape it in that way. There’s no better way to do this in Northwest Indiana than through the streets of Lowell in one of the longest-standing traditions in the Region.
The 105th Annual Lowell Labor Day Parade took place on Monday, September 2. One of the organizations that has contributed to the Lowell Labor Day Parade as a major sponsor for many years is McColly Real Estate. Myra Harris is a real estate broker with McColly Real Estate. She recalls being involved with the parade since she was a kid and has seen how the community has continued to gravitate towards the event more over time.
“When I was younger, my dad owned a business and we’d ride through the parade in the back of a semi-truck,” Harris said. “This is just a great community event that so many participate in. Even when it rains, people are still sitting out on the street watching the parade and we’re still out there participating in it. The loyalty and support of this community is truly special.”
McColly Real Estate manages 22 offices, including 15 in the Region, and the Lowell Labor Day Parade acts as another way for them to give back through a thrilling experience.
“McColly has been a standard in not only Lowell, but all of our communities,” Harris said. “We’re all about participation and showing up for each other. It’s equally as heartwarming to see how these communities stand by us as well.”
Harris is most grateful that she can share this celebration with a group that is cognizant of the meaning of Labor Day.
“The camaraderie is just awesome,” Harris said. “We have a team of great agents who stand behind us at McColly, so it’s nice to come together for a fun event outside of the office every now and then. The adrenaline is always high and you can see all the smiling faces throughout the parade. Regardless of someone’s age or whether they’re a participant or viewer, there’s a lot of excitement here to make everyone’s day.”
Other local residents also gathered in Lowell to celebrate alongside the McColly team. Elaine Sullivan is one attendee who believes this is the perfect family-friendly experience to understand and celebrate the significance of this day.
“We have the whole family here to hang out at the parade,” Sullivan said. “It’s a great community event that’s always a lot of fun.”
This parade also gives the community a chance to learn more about many of the participating organizations. Jen Berg is a Lowell resident who attended the parade. She appreciates how this event spotlights a plethora of businesses and groups for a grand gathering in the community.
“It’s great to see how it helps bring everybody together,” Berg said. “There’s nothing better than seeing groups or organizations from all the surrounding communities, and it also helps us learn more about some of these places.”
