Mayor Olga Velazquez

Mayor Olga G. Velazquez was elected as the first female mayor in the City of Portage and Porter County in 2007. She had served on the Portage City Council, Portage Plan Commission, Ways and Means, Ordinance and Budget Committees and chaired the Senior Services Advisory Committee. She initiated the Portage Youth Commission that provides youth a voice in local government.

Mayor Velazquez graduated from Indiana University and worked as a service director for a local mental health center. She resigned her position after 25 years of service to fulfill her duties as Mayor of Portage. She feels her experience in communicating with corporations, groups, individuals, and families provides a solid foundation in serving the citizens of Portage as their mayor. She has been married to Julio Velazquez for 31 years and they have two adult sons Adam and Daniel.

Portage’s location on Lake Michigan makes is easy for Olga to spend her leisure time going to the beach, swimming, boating, hiking and fishing.
