Center for Hospice Care (CHC) and the Hospice Foundation (HF) have been in a partnership with the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU) since 2008. During that time, we have worked together on a variety of projects to help make palliative care accessible to all in Uganda, including providing scholarships for healthcare workers to be trained in palliative care, helping to build awareness of PCAU through the creation of two documentaries and advancing research, aided by a number of student interns.
A driving force behind this partnership from the beginning, Roberta Spencer is currently wrapping up another trip to Uganda to work with PCAU on several initiatives. A former CHC employee, Roberta has been visiting PCAU on a yearly basis – outside of the COVID era – as a volunteer. Her efforts have made PCAU a more efficient organization and helped to strengthen the bonds of the partnership.
A joint program that is near and dear to Roberta's heart is the Road to Hope, which provides an education for children who were caregivers for one or both of their parents with a serious illness and receiving palliative care. Without this program, a majority of these children would have no means to continue their education. Her trip usually coincides with the annual Road to Hope Camp when many of the children on the program gather in Kampala before beginning their school year.
