Local Talent Entertains with a Free Evening of Short Plays

Craig-GolbeskyLubeznik Center for the Arts' First Fridays @ 5 series continues on Friday, May 6 with a selection of intriguing short plays presented by local award-winning artists.

Directed by Craig Golbesky, the creative force behind several excellent productions, these one-act plays are written by three local playwrights:

Interim Chair of the Department of English and Modern Languages at Purdue North Central, Dr. Jerry Holt is the author of acclaimed plays including, "Rickey," the story of baseball guru Branch Rickey and his friendship with Jackie Robinson. Holt is also the author of the novel "The Killing of Strangers," a thriller based on the Kent State shootings of 1970.

Lucrecia Guerrero is the award-winning author of "Chasing Shadows," a collection of linked stories – and of the upcoming "Tree of Sighs," a novel. She has taught a Flash Fiction course for Lubeznik Center.

Margaret Lisle's short stories have appeared in Outrider Press/TWG anthologies, including Earth Beneath, Sky Above, A Kiss is Still a Kiss and Family Gatherings. A retired Administrative Assistant and native of Chicago, she now lives with her husband in Beverly Shores, Indiana.

Featuring performances by some of the best talent the area has to offer, themes range from drama to comedy, with the ability to make you laugh one moment and cry the next. Titles include:

Boarding: A Love Story: the story of an OCD sufferer who finds that boarding an airplane just after 9/11 can be perhaps too daunting – until he gets some comfort from a surprising source.

Smoking Room: three friends from Hippie Days gather to read the will of a lost friend; and get remarkable directions for his funeral celebration.

Look on the Bright Side: an after-hours interview between a college professor and a presumptuous student takes a truly bizarre turn.

Game On: a mother and her grown daughter vie for control in a pitched battle of words.
