The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority will be hosting an information session about the Indiana Bicentennial and Torch Relay on Wednesday, Aug. 26. The informational session will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be hosted in the Indiana Welcome Center’s theater.
E. Rene Stanley, deputy director of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission, and Noelle Szydlyk, state director for the Indiana Torch Relay, will be on hand to answer any questions and discuss ways to become involved with the 200-year celebration for the state of Indiana.
“This is a great opportunity to learn how to be a part of the Indiana Bicentennial Celebration,” said Larry Blanchard, Lake County bicentennial coordinator. “Each county is working hard to represent their area during this event. We look forward to having the public participate and help make Lake County’s celebration memorable.”
Attendees will also be able to ask questions and learn how to nominate torchbearers for the Indiana Torch Relay. The South Shore CVA and the Lake County bicentennial committee are accepting nominations for Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay torchbearers through Dec. 31, 2015.
Lake County torchbearer nominations recognize local Hoosiers who demonstrate exceptional public service, excellence in their profession, acts of heroism or volunteer service to their neighborhood, community, region or state. The online nomination form and nominee guidelines are available at www.indiana2016.org/torchrelay/nomination-forms. Paper nomination forms can be picked up during the informational session and can be returned to the Indiana Welcome Center or submitted via email to katie@southshorecva.com.
The torch relay will begin on Sept. 9, 2016 in Corydon and end with a celebration Oct. 15, 2016 on the grounds of the statehouse in Indianapolis. The torch will travel through Lake County on Oct. 9 and Oct. 11, 2016, as it makes the 2,300-mile journey through each of Indiana’s 92 counties.
