La Porte Police Department Operation SAVE Announcement

The La Porte City Police Department conducted 23 School Bus Safety patrols from August 14th through September 13th.  Officers worked 70.75 hours of extra patrols under the Stop Arm Violation Enforcement (SAVE) grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.  Patrols targeted those drivers who pass School Buses while the Stop Arm is activated.

During those 23 patrols, 22 violators were summoned for passing a School Bus while the Stop Arm was activated.  One seatbelt violation was issued and two Driving While Suspended citations were issued.  There were also 2 other Criminal charges as well as eight warnings for other infractions issued.

Although the Stop Arm Violation Enforcement (SAVE) grant has concluded, officers will still be enforcing Stop Arm Violations when observed.  “The safety of our children while loading and unloading at a bus stop is a concern in LaPorte and violators will be summoned to court when a violation is observed”, said Captain Pat Hemphill.

SAVE is a traffic safety grant program funded by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.  The goal of SAVE is to protect the lives of children getting on and off a bus and enforce violations involving School Bus Stop Arms.
