La Porte Police Department Continues Indiana Criminal Justice Institute Partnership

La-Porte-Police-DepartmentThe La Porte Police Department is pleased to announce we will continue our commitment to traffic safety in the City of La Porte for 2015 through our partnership with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. La Porte is receiving a $21,150 grant for Operation Pull Over which supports impaired driving, passenger restraint and dangerous driving enforcement. This grant runs through September 2015.

The main focus areas of Operation Pull Over are reducing traffic crashes and related injuries and fatalities. Impaired driving enforcement works toward reducing alcohol related crashes. Our aggressive driving enforcement targets dangerous driving behavior such as speeding, sign/signal violations, following too closely, reckless driving, texting while driving and other unsafe driving behavior to reduce crashes. The goal of our seat belt and child restraint enforcement is to increase passenger restraint use. Passengers who wear seat belts drastically reduce the likelihood of injury or death in traffic crashes.

The La Porte Police Department’s first enforcement event of the new grant year will be 40 hours of seat belt patrols run between October 24 and October 31. This time period, around Halloween, was selected to promote safe driving behavior at a time when many of our citizens are engaged in hay rides, haunted houses, trick or treating and Halloween related events that result in a higher than normal number of pedestrians – especially at night. Officers will be observing for seat belt and child restraint violations, as well as other traffic violations, and persons committing violations will be cited.
