Kohls Goes Green for YMCA

As part of the Kohls Cares Go Green, over thirty employees from the Portage and Merrillville stores donated their time to help out at the Portage Township YMCA, cleaning up the area. Every year they choose a nonprofit to support through the Go Green effort, and this year they chose the YMCA.

"They asked if they could do something for our facilities," said marketing director of the YMCA, Nancy Simpson, "so we thought about doing an outdoor project to maintain and clean the environment as part of the Go Green event."

Even with the threat of rain and the blistering cold, employees and family members joined in cleaning around the facilities, picking up trash and dead branches, as well as mowing and raking. Disregarding the bad weather, they laughed and had fun, coming together to make the community a cleaner, more enjoyable place.

When asked how they got connected with the YMCA, Jenny Tim, the Portage Kohls representative said, "I've done a lot of events with Nancy, and I know that she would truly appreciate what Kohl's could do for them, and it would go to a good cause."

Sherry Thomas, the Merrillville store representative explained, "Every Kohls store, which is over 1200 stores around the US, is participating in the month of April in some green event. They're expecting 10% of the employees to volunteer, which we met here today. A lot of us have the day off today, but it's a good thing to help out and bring your families to."

Hats off to Kohls and their contributions to maintaining our community and doing their part to protect the environment!
