Kids Learn Healthy Habits with the YMCA

The Portage Township YMCA and St. Mary Medical Center have done it again. The 2013 Healthy Kids Day went off without a hitch. The nation’s largest health day for children and families, YMCA Healthy Kids Day offers families a chance to play and learn about health and ways to promote healthy living. On this fun filled day, the YMCA opens their doors to all families free of charge.

The Portage YMCA planned all types of great activities including a hula-hoop contest, cheerleading, play and dance time, face painting, and kids zumba! Drew Hutmacher was visiting the YMCA with her mother and grandmother. She said she likes Healthy Kids Day because she “likes jumping.

The kids had a chance to meet and play with Culvers mascot Scoopie and meet Caleb Terbush, a Purdue football player who is training for the NFL draft. Caleb signed footballs for the kids and said the best part of the day was “the kids smiling, after a long week at school and raining weather.

Auditions for the summer day camp counselors were held during the event as well. The candidates dressed in funny outfits and spent time playing with kids and showing how great they interact with children.

Fun and playtime included great music by DJ Nicktunez, bounce houses and tours of the fire trucks and police cars. During all the fun parents could take advantage of summer day camp registration, raffles, children ID cards and, for one day only, the Portage YMCA waived the $25 registration fee for all that signed up for a new membership!

Ms. Gomez brought all three of her boys to the YMCA and said she loves it because “it’s fun for the whole family and she can bring her entire family.” All had fun and many are excited to visit the Portage YMCA again.
