JP Garza’s goal in 79th minute broke a halftime tie to help lift the Purdue University Calumet men’s soccer team to a thrilling 3-1 league victory over rival Calumet College of St. Joseph Wednesday at East Chicago Central High School.
Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan) found the back of the net from the right side of the box in the final 10 minutes to give the Peregrines (5-5-1, 3-2-1) a lead late and open the door for one more score, eight minutes later in the 87th.
That’s when sophomore Nico Monteiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, IBMEC) added an insurance goal courtesy of an assist from freshman Graciano Santos (East Chicago, Ind./East Chicago Central).
Purdue Calumet scored the match’s first goal when sophomore Cristian Garcia (Whiting, Ind./Clark) netted his first goal of the season in the 16th minute, aided by an assist from junior Pedro Mendieta (Lynwood, Ill./Mt.Carmel/Elmhurst).
The Crimson Wave (4-8, 1-4) responded just before the half when Gregory Prohl tied the match at 1-1 in the 43rd to send match into a draw at the break.
Peregrines’ freshman keeper Miguel David (Spring Valley, Calif./Bonita Vista) recorded four saves in the victory.
Purdue Calumet returns to action Saturday, Oct. 11, when the Peregrines host CCAC foe Cardinal Stritch in a 5:30 p.m. match at Munster High School.
