IU Northwest to Hold Blood drive Jan. 29

Student Alumni Association recruiting donors Jan. 15, 16, 27

rot2The Student Alumni Association (SAA) and Office of Alumni Relations at Indiana University Northwest are rallying to restock the shelves at area blood banks with a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 29 in the Moraine Student Center, located on the north end of the IU Northwest campus in Gary.

SAA members will be taking appointments from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on January 15, 16 and 27 in the Moraine Student Center.

Current statistics report that someone in the U.S. needs donated blood every two seconds and more than 41,000 blood donations are needed daily. A single donated unit of blood can help save up to three lives. According to the American Red Cross, an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, but less than 10 percent actually do each year.

To sign up for the American Red Cross blood drive, visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter zip code 46408 to schedule an appointment.

First-time donors will need to create a profile. Returning donors can log in by entering their e-mail address and date of birth as the default password. Or, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at (219) 980-6769.

While all blood types are needed, donors with types O negative and B negative are strongly urged to donate. Please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or stop at one of the tables on Jan. 15, 16 or 27 to make your lifesaving appointment.

All those who donate a pint of blood at the drive will receive a voucher for a free pint of Culver’s Frozen Custard.
