New U.S. News & World Report ranking places IU Northwest in the top 10
Indiana University Northwest earned a spot on the U.S. News and World Report rankings released last week, landing in the tenth spot for campus ethnic diversity among Midwest regional universities.
“We are so excited to be recognized for the multicultural kaleidoscope on our campus,” said Vicki Román-Lagunas, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Our diversity is a strength and one of the things our students say they like most about IU Northwest.” Nearly 48 percent of the school’s total enrollment is composed of minority students, with Hispanics accounting for more than 25 percent of all students.
Earlier this year, IU Northwest was designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Postsecondary Education. “It’s fitting that we were named to the U.S. News Campus Ethnic Diversity list on the first day of Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week (Sept. 14 – 20) and during Hispanic Heritage Month,” added Román-Lagunas. “We couldn’t have timed it any better.”
Making the list
The U.S. News Campus Ethnic Diversity list identities colleges where students are most likely to encounter undergraduates from racial or ethnic groups different from their own. The ranking factors in the total proportion of minority students, leaving out international students, and the overall mix of groups. The ethnic categories used in the calculations are non-Hispanic African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian, Asian, non-Hispanic white and multiracial (two or more races).
