IU Northwest Gallery Features ‘Sun, Moon, Stars, Rain’ Exhibit; Reception Planned for Jan. 15

Gregg Hertzlieb’s drawings reflect his personality, interests

rot4The Indiana University Northwest campus and the greater Northwest Indiana community are invited to view the work of Gregg Hertzlieb in the Gallery for Contemporary Art. The exhibit runs from January 13 through February 7. A reception is planned for 12 to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15 in the gallery, located in the Savannah Center.

“I hope to tell a story in my pictures, and the story is basically an extended investigation of who I am and what I discover in the landscape of both my imagination and the region I call home,” said Hertzlieb, a Chesterton resident. “In a sense, I wish my works to function like a message in a bottle, where through the drawings I reach across time and space to communicate to the viewer the way I felt, the things I was thinking about, as I created the picture.

Hertzlieb is the director/curator of the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University. An exhibiting artist working primarily in watercolor and pen and ink, Hertzlieb has shown his art in numerous exhibitions and has both public and private collections.

“I concentrate primarily on drawing because I like the directness of this art-making approach. Each pen line I apply to the paper breathes more life into my chosen subjects, and I enjoy the thrill of seeing these subjects emerge and proclaim their individual identities.

“Overall, my art takes me on a quirky, surreal journey of self-discovery, where pleasant characters get invented in the process that, through their disarmingly unusual natures and appearances, encourage viewers to perhaps plumb their own imaginations and delight in the wonders they may find there.”

Hertzlieb has a master’s degree in fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Monday and Thursday; from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday; and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday.

The mission of the IU Northwest Gallery for Contemporary Art is to present an innovative exhibition program that complements and enhances the university’s academic offerings. Exhibit art collections are for study and research, and are also meant to educate the university community and general public about the forms and issues of contemporary and historic art from all cultures.
