Leo Baekeland
(1863-1944)

Leo Baekeland was a Belgium born, American chemist who patented more than 55 inventions in his lifetime. Some of his inventions are Velox photographic paper, processes for separation of copper and cadmium, shellac coatings, impregnation of wood, etc. But the most important invention was something called Bakelite or officially named (polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride)...Bakelite was a nonexpensive, nonflammable, and versatile plastic which marked the beginning of the modern plastics industry. It was the first plastic invented that held its shape after being heated. This plastic penetrated nearly all branches of industry and was being used to make radios, telephones, electrical insulators, and other items due to the properties of insulation and heat resistance. At the time of his death, Bakelite was being used in over 15,000 articles all over the world...
