University to kick off the fall semester with a variety of on-campus events 
Indiana University Northwest’s Fall 2010 semester begins on Monday, Aug. 30, but not without some fun and games to welcome both incoming and returning students. The campus will be filled with free food, games, giveaways, and live entertainment during the first two weeks of the semester. The on-campus events are open to all students, faculty and staff.
Week One: Welcome Back Week
IU Northwest is anticipating record enrollment for the coming semester, and to ensure all students – both new and returning – are able to find their way around campus, greeters will be located at key points on the university. Information ranging from a campus map, to on-site food options and the new RedHawk Shuttle will be provided to all those arriving on campus.
Greeters will be stationed Monday, Aug. 30, and Tuesday, Aug. 31, at select campus spots, including the north entrance of Savannah, the campus side of Hawthorn Hall, and the RedHawk Shuttle stops (Moraine Student Center, located just south of the main campus parking lot, adjacent to the Savannah Center, and the Library Conference Center’s south entrance on 35th Ave.)
And don’t forget to pick-up a college survival kit complete with candy, gum, RedHawk decals and other IU Northwest-branded items. The free, RedHawk goody bags will be handed out to students during the first week of classes at various campus locations, including Savannah Center, Hawthorn Hall and Dunes Medical Professional Building.
Week Two: Club Call Out Week
The second week of classes, officially known as Club Call Out Week, is an opportunity for students to show some school spirit and learn how to become involved at IU Northwest.
Starting Tuesday, Sept. 7 through Thursday, Sept. 9 various campus organizations will have booths set up in Savannah Center from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. IU Northwest student clubs and organizations like the Black Student Union, Campus Crusade for Christ, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club will have members present to share information about the club’s mission, upcoming meetings and events.
A DJ will provide musical entertainment on-site at the information fair, raising excitement and getting students pumped up for the new semester.
Tobacco-Free Campus
One of the highlights of Club Call Out Week will be an appearance by Rufus, the RedHawk mascot, in support of the university’s Tobacco-Free Initiative. Rufus will don a tobacco-free t-shirt and will be joined by several other campus organizations and services to raise awareness of the university’s tobacco-free policy.
These organizations, including the Student Nurses Association, the Biology Club, the Campus Health and Wellness Center, the IU School of Medicine-Northwest, and the Wellness Team, will pass out literature on smoking cessation tips and resources, no-smoking bookmarks, and ribbons.
The Health and Wellness Center will provide free Spirometry testing to measure lung function, specifically to evaluate the volume and/or flow of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. This testing is an important tool in assessing conditions such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
In 2007, IU determined that all campuses would be tobacco-free in order to promote the health and well-being of employees, students, and constituents. Tobacco use or sale is prohibited on university-owned, -operated, -or leased property.
Other Events
Between classes, check out the Nintendo Wii stations set up in the Savannah Center lobby and in the Moraine Student Center lounge. Wii games and tournaments will take place throughout the week of Sept. 6 to promote “Wii Wednesdays,” which occur during the semester.
And, keep a lookout for some favorite backyard games taking place on campus during the week of Sept. 6. Weather-permitting, the Office of Student Life and Athletics will organize games of tug of war, corn hole, water balloon dodge ball, a Twister tournament, and possibly a volleyball game.
Free popcorn, lemonade and cotton candy will be on hand throughout the week at select campus locations.
Club Call Out Week will conclude on Thursday, Sept. 9 with a free barbeque sponsored by the School of Business and Economics’ Accounting and Business Student Organization. Food will be served around 11:30 a.m. in the Library Conference Center’s courtyard. This event is open only to IU Northwest students.
