Ben Chappell had a record-breaking day for Indiana, and Mitch Ewald booted two short field goals late, giving Indiana a 34-31 overtime victory at Purdue to win back the Old Oaken Bucket on Saturday.
The Hoosiers (5-7, 1-7 Big Ten) won for the first time since 1996 in West Lafayette.
Ewald capped a 14-play drive by making a 26-yard field goal with 9 seconds left in regulation to force the first overtime game in the 113-game series.
Purdue (4-8, 2-6) got the ball first in overtime, but on the Boilermakers' third play, Rob Henry was picked off by freshman linebacker Jeff Thomas.
Chappell wasted no time in winning it. He threw a 14-yard strike down the middle to tight end Ted Bolser. Chappell and Trea Burgess had a mix-up on the next play, but Burgess fell on the fumble for a 1-yard gain. Burgess was tackled for a 3-yard loss on the next play, and coach Bill Lynch then sent Ewald in to kick the 31-yard field goal on third down.
