Hooked on Art Street Festival promotes recovery through the use of arts, music, faith, and healing

The Hooked On Street Festival is an annual, family-friendly festival that fuses visual and performing arts within the community. This year was the ninth annual event for the art festival, which took place in the heart and joy of Downtown Chesterton at Thomas Centennial Park. It was presented by The Artistic Recovery, Inc., also now known as Three20 Recovery Community.

Proceeds from the Hooked on Art Street Festival are used to support recovery programs and scholarships at Three20 Recovery Community.

“The whole reason why we're doing a chart art festival is to raise awareness and money for anyone in recovery from a drug problem, as well as just bringing the community together for a good cause,” said Benjamin May, marketing coordinator at The Artistic Recovery.

Every artist or team was given either a four-by-four or six-by-six prepped square to create the chalk art of their dreams. Two chalk competitions took place – one for the adults and one for the youth. Awards were given out to the first, second, and third place winners in both competitions. Within the adult competition, first place was awarded $1,000, second place $750, and third place $250. The first place winner of the youth competition was given a $250 Blick Art Materials gift certificate.

Chalk artists were able to utilize a variety of mediums to express their creativity, completing a work of art from start to finish over the course of the day. If you ran out of art supplies mid-drawing, you could stop over at the Three20 Recovery tent and pick up some extra supplies such as acrylic paint pens, colored pencils, art crayons, permanent markers, colored pencils, neon highlighters, and pastels.

Delicious food, unique shopping, live music, and art activities for all ages were just some of the awesome highlights that you could find yourself enjoying at Saturday’s event. Different organizations around the community hosted a kids’ corner where you could purchase tickets and do one of the following six activities: ninja turtle plate crafts, scientific lab drink, make-your-own comic book, build-your-own superhero shield, fun with fruit, and create-your-own tie-dye shirt.

At the Three20 Recovery booth, attendees were able to buy any merchandise from The Artistic Recovery. Each design was created by local artists who are in recovery or artists who wish to support the mission of recovery and healing. All proceeds made at the event are being used to support recovery programs.

The 2021 sponsors that Three20 Recovery would like to thank for helping to make the event successful this year include the following: Dreaming Tree, Indiana Recovery Network, Circles in the Wind – Amish Furniture, John W. Anderson, Eagle Crossing Apartments, Porter County Community Foundation, Urschel Laboratories, Inc., 1st Source Bank, Strack & Van Til, In Good Company Management Services, Tilden Enterprises, Kittredge & Zehner P.C., Berglund Construction, Vidimos, Inc., Rothschild Agency, Inc., Blick Art Materials, Leo’s Mobile Bicycle Service, Coastal Valley Water Company, and Riley’s Railhouse Bed & Breakfast.

“It's just a place where you can come in when you need a safe place to be dealing with your recovery,” said May. “Our programs allow you to be in the community with other people that are in recovery. It's like a way to uplift other people and it shows you that you are not on your journey alone.”
