Festival Park was transformed into a winter wonderland for the occasion. Light-up decorations featuring reindeer, snowmen, and classic Christmas characters such as Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the Grinch were on display, courtesy of the local business Sign Gypsies. Families posed for photos with the cheerful cutouts, capturing memories of the evening. Vendors, including Traveling Tom’s Coffee Truck, offered warm drinks to help attendees stand the freezing temperatures.

Excitement rippled through the crowd as Santa Claus made his grand entrance on a Hobart Fire Department truck. Waving enthusiastically to the crowd, Santa provided a magical presence that captivated everyone in attendance. After greeting families, he posed for photos with the fire crew before heading into the Hobart Community Center, where a long line of families awaited their chance to take photos with Santa, courtesy of Classic Photo of Hobart.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Hobart High School band played classic Christmas tunes inside the community center, while a kindergarten Girl Scout troop sang carols. Outside, under the pavilion at Festival Park, Hobart Assembly Church and the Hobart High School Wolfgang choir filled the air with traditional holiday songs.

At 5:30 p.m., Mayor Josh Huddlestun addressed the crowd, expressing gratitude for the community’s strong turnout despite the chilly weather.

“Events like this really bring out the best in people,” Huddlestun said. “Our sense of community is one of our greatest strengths, and seeing everyone come together tonight to celebrate is truly heartwarming.”

The mayor also praised the efforts of the city’s Parks Department and staff, who played a key role in organizing the event.

Just as the crowd joined the mayor in counting down to the highly anticipated tree lighting, a surprise twist thrilled the audience. The Grinch leaped in front of Huddlestun in an unexpected attempt to steal the show. The playful interruption brought laughs and cheers from the crowd, adding a fun and unexpected moment to the evening. The tree was then successfully lit, casting a warm glow over the park.

For Huddlestun, the role of lighting the tree is a privilege, but he was quick to share credit with the team behind the scenes.

“It’s always a team effort, and our team does an amazing job,” he said. “As mayor, I have the privilege of lighting the tree, but it’s not about me- it’s about the community, the kids, and the families. It’s about creating an opportunity for everyone to come here and enjoy the season together.”

His remarks highlighted the collaborative effort of city staff, local groups, and volunteers in making the event a success.

The grand finale came moments later, as a fireworks display lit up the night sky. Reflections of colorful explosions illuminated the surface of Lake George, creating a breathtaking visual that attendees watched in awe.

Huddlestun also expressed appreciation for the contributions of local groups that helped make the event memorable. From the carolers singing traditional holiday songs to nonprofit organizations supporting the community, the collective effort was prominent.

“The strength of our community is reflected in the way we come together and support each other,” he said. “Local groups like these make the holiday season special and ensure events like this are a success.”

Whether through music, decorations, or charitable initiatives, Hobart’s residents and organizations radiate the spirit of the season. The holiday season holds a special place in Huddlestun’s heart, especially as a lifelong Hobart resident.

“Downtown Hobart feels like a Hallmark movie this time of year,” he said. “Seeing the Christmas lights, people helping one another, and groups like Tri Kappa with their giving tree- it all shows the strength of our community. This tree lighting really kicks off that spirit.”

The event served as a festive start to Hobart’s holiday season, bringing together residents of all ages to enjoy music, decorations, and community spirit. With the Christmas tree glowing brightly and fireworks lighting up the night sky, the celebration provided a memorable experience for families and a reminder of the shared traditions that define the holiday season in Hobart.
