Harlem Wizards Basketball Team Set to Battle PHS Faculty All Stars

On Friday, June 3, Portage High School is putting on a fundraiser that is the first of its kind in the city!  The Harlem Wizards traveling basketball team will visit PHS and take on the Portage Faculty All-Stars in a game of hoops.  The Portage squad will be comprised of teachers, coaches and other faculty members from the all of the Portage Township Schools.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Indians football program.  Head coach Jeromy Flowers has been in charge of organizing the game.  He will also play on the Faculty team.  Other members of the Portage roster that have been confirmed by Flowers include girls soccer coach and physical education teacher Amanda Isakson, athletic director Jeff Smith and assistant principal Michael Spagna.

Flowers boldly predicted last week in an interview with the Indians News Network that Portage would come out on top 100-50.  According to the team’s official website, the Harlem Wizards hold a winning streak of over 2,800 games, the longest in all of professional sports.  The Wizards travel to many different high school gymnasiums and college campuses, where they take on teams put together by the schools.  They play an extravagant style of basketball, putting on an entertaining show for the crowd.  Harlem has a storied franchise history that began in 1962.

The Portage football team and coaching staff has worked hard in order to make this event possible.  Tickets are still available for presale in the PHS athletic office at the price of $10 for adults and $8 for students.  They can also be purchased at the door for $12 per adult and $10 per student.

The Wizards will be spending the entire day on Friday in the city of Portage.  Their journey starts with a visit to PHS in the morning.  Throughout the rest of the day, they will make stops at Willowcreek Middle School, Fegely Middle School and four of the elementary schools to perform for the students and encourage them to attend the game.  The team will arrive back at PHS in time for the 7:00pm tip-off of the game against the Portage Faculty All-Stars.
