For the first time in program history, the Indiana University Northwest women’s soccer team begins the season 2-0 after defeating the University of Michigan-Dearborn 1-0 Friday afternoon.
The undefeated RedHawks return to the pitch Wednesday, Aug. 28 against IU Kokomo at 8 p.m. in Crown Point.
Eight minutes into the contest Jiana Church tried to get IUN on the scoreboard first, but her shot sailed high. A few minutes later Xiomara Santana and Daisy Bonilla had looks at the net, but they were turned away,
UM-Dearborn, meanwhile, tried to break the scoreless tie midway through the opening half, but were denied. During the barrage of shots, Isabel Escalera stopped the only attempt she faced to take the game into the locker room tied at zero.
Escalera would make two more saves in the 58th and 59th minute, while the RedHawks offense continued to pepper the Wolverines goalie. The RedHawks finally broke through in the 72nd minute after Santana took a possession of a deflected shot by Abbigail Cutler to make it 1-0.
Over the final 10 minutes of play Kendal Carrubba and Olivia Hansen each tried to put another shot into the net, but their attempts were stopped. Escalera would only face one more shot and she kept the shutout intact by making her fourth save of the day.
