Hammond’s Edison Park Design Wins Award

Congratulations to the City of Hammond Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr., 4th District Councilman Bill Emerson, the Hammond Board of Park Commissioners and Parks and Recreation Administrator, Mark Heintz on the award-winning Edison Park. The Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (INASLA) recognized outstanding professional achievement projects completed in the State of Indiana at an awards ceremony on September 27, 2019.

The City of Hammond’s Edison Park project was selected as an award winner in the design-constructed category. Awards are given in an effort to raise standards of excellence, heighten public appreciation of quality landscape architecture and expand public awareness. Entries were juried by peers in the landscape architecture profession by members of the St. Louis (MO) Chapter of the ASLA. Congratulations also go out to the engineering and design team that worked with the City of Hammond Parks and Recreation department on this award-winning park improvement project which was led by MCR Partners, Matt Reardon and HWC Engineering, Keith Sattler.

This $2 million park improvement, funded by a 2017 park bond issue, included the demolition of the old park site including a 64-year-old pool along with new construction of 1/3 mile walking perimeter sidewalk, a new playground, an agility course play structure, an open air shelter, two soccer fields with artificial turf and walls, a ‘skate spot’ skate area, two sets of concrete corn hole, three porch swings, irrigation and landscaping including 64 new trees in this 4½ acre park site.  “I knew we had a good design plan going when kids were already hopping the construction fence to play on the soccer fields and playground before the project was completed,” stated Mayor McDermott.  Edison Park is located at the corner of Mulberry Street & Madison Avenue. Parks and Recreation Administrator Mark Heintz added, “Edison Park is just another step in making each of Hammond’s parks unique in their own way to encourage people to visit all of the City’s parks and facilities in their destination for recreation.”
