As the spooky season wraps up and Northwest Indiana heads toward the winter holidays, the children who braved the cold on Halloween to get their candy are enjoying their hard-earned sweets. However, those who decided to trade their candy to Advanced Dental Concepts’ Halloween Candy Buy-Back event in Portage Friday night might have gotten the better deal in the end.
The Halloween Candy Buy-Back at Advanced Dental Concepts is an annual event centered on community service and dental health. While the main attraction of the event lets children trade in their Halloween candy for some sweet, sweet cash, kids also enjoyed the costume contest, games, prizes and more. The candy collected at the event will be turned into care packages for troops overseas and other organizations in the area.
The whole event was organized by the team at Advanced Dental Concepts. While the idea of preventing cavities and dental issues in the Region is a huge plus, the concept of giving back to the community and throwing a great party was even more rewarding.
Ashley Edmonds, the office administrator and social media/marketing coordinator at Advanced Dental Concepts, is a huge fan of this event.
“Advanced Dental Concepts has been hosting this special event for the past 10 years,” Edmonds said. “And the whole time, it's been a way to give back to the community and provide some fun for kids. Plus, it allows kids to get rid of the candy they might not like," she said.
This year, in particular, the candy from the buy-back event will go back to three organizations: Operation Gratitude, a nationwide organization that sends care packages to troops overseas; St. Jude House in Crown Point; and Gabriel’s Horn Homeless Shelter in Portage, a safe refuge for women and their children.
The Portage location of Advanced Dental Concepts was filled to the brim with activities, games, face painting, food and more. Each patient room had a game where children could win prizes. One of the highlights of the event was when the Portage Fire Department stopped by in their fire truck and ambulance for a stellar photo opportunity.
Kathleen Hayes, business coordinator at Advanced Dental Concepts, is also a big fan of the buy-back event.
“This is the first year we’ve held the event at our Portage location,” Hayes said. “And since the weather was so bad yesterday, hosting it inside was a great idea. The staff did a great job decorating, it looks amazing!”
Parents are also loving the benefits of the event.
“I took my kids last year when it was at the Crown Point location, and they had so much fun!” said Laura Horton, a parent, and participant in the event. “My kids were totally exhausted afterward, so it was perfect for me in so many ways - fewer cavities, they’re giving back to a good cause, and they’re having fun.”
The Halloween Candy Buy-back event is also a great way to find out more about the services that Advanced Dental Concepts provides for the Portage and Crown Point areas. Besides being skilled in family dentistry, the staff at Advanced Dental Concepts prides themselves on taking exceptional care of their younger patients, especially children.
“Once children realize that the candy they are turning in is going to help someone else, and they’ll get some cash in return, they just get so excited and they have so much fun! We’re already looking forward to it again next year," Edmonds said.
