While the COVID-19 pandemic may have slowed progress for some organizations, it caused others to find creative solutions to new challenges. This is why, in 2021, Goodwill Industries of Michiana, Inc. established Goodwill on the Go.
Goodwill on the Go began when Goodwill’s Group Violence Intervention program partnered with the Kroc Center to provide much-needed resources for people. Together, Goodwill and the Kroc Center were able to deliver food baskets to people living in housing complexes where violence often occurred. Goodwill partnered with community social service agencies, apartment complexes and the South Bend Housing Authority to educate residents about opportunities and services that Goodwill and other community agencies have to offer.
“Goodwill on the Go goes into areas of the community that have seen violence and crime. We see apartment complexes so excited that Goodwill is there that they come out and visit for hours. The community is learning that Goodwill is a resource to bring hope to their families and community,” said Goodwill Director of Marketing Kristin Robinette.
The community was very receptive of this initial event, and in 2022, Goodwill on the Go expanded to offer its resources to La Porte, Michigan City, Gary, and Elkhart. These Goodwill on the Go community events enable Goodwill to bring resources directly to the community. Community members are able to learn about Goodwill’s vast service capabilities while enjoying music, food, and good company.
“With a DJ playing music and some hot dogs on the grill, the community comes out. While visiting with each other, they are learning about Goodwill opportunities,” Robinette said.
With community career and education services, Goodwill spans the gamut to offer a variety of services to cover a wide range of needs. These programs include Nurse-Family Partnership, Group Violence Intervention, 2nd Chance, The Excel Center, Career Connections, Industrial Services, and Ability First among many others.
