Members of the Portage Township YMCA “Girl’s on the Run” program participated in a 5K run this past Saturday, May 22, in Highland, IN. “Girl’s on the Run” is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The curriculum addresses all aspects of girls’ development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being. This 8-week program weaves training for a 5K run with lessons that empower girls to celebrate their bodies, honor their voices and embrace their gifts.
This program, led by Amber R. Morris and Ashley Bernardi, ran from March 30th thru May 22nd and met every Tues. and Thurs. from 4:15-5:30 p.m. for girls ages 10-14. On May 22nd, it ended with a 5K run in Highland, IN. This run combined all of the “Girl’s on the Run” teams in Northwest, IN. The Portage Township YMCA enrolled three participants in their “Girl’s on the Run” program this spring, sisters Jordan and Ruth Nicholson and Jada Sorrels. The YMCA is preparing to hold another “Girl’s on the Run” program this fall.
